Caledonian Road shines at What House? Awards 2015
400 Caledonian Rd scoops Gold for Sustainable development of the Year at the WhatHouse? Awards 2015.
The igloo development comprising two private courtyard spaces, 25 new homes, and 3 creative studios in Islington, London has been recognised for sustainability and design excellence. The WhatHouse? Awards acknowledge the ‘Best new homes in Britain’. The judges report commented: “Four Hundred Caledonian Road embraces sustainability with little apparent compromise, despite the constraints of a difficult site.” “Both externally and internally the specification and quality of finish is high – and the neighbourhood and community have not been forgotten.” “igloo must be applauded for a scheme that is sustainable, attractive and highly liveable.”
igloo acquired this urban infill site to bring life back to a historic stretch of the ‘Cally’ with the scheme completing in 2015.
Sustainability features (to reduce energy usage and occupier bills) include solar-supplemented photovoltaic electricity, combined heat and power (CHP) heat and electricity generation, rainwater harvesting, green roofs, super insulation and airtightness (working to igloo’s ‘fabric first’ approach to development), intelligent Nest learning thermostats, and mechanical heat recovery (MVHR). All homes are EPC A-rated.
