Trent Basin to demonstrate innovative community energy scheme
igloo’s Trent Basin development in Nottingham has been selected to demonstrate a UK first for community energy. The scheme will demonstrate a new way of heating and providing electricity to homes, with energy generated, stored and distributed in the community.
The £100m low energy Trent Basin community will benefit from reduced carbon emissions and improved energy security as a result of the scheme. In addition, energy costs for residents will be cut by up to 30% and surplus energy generated will be sold back to the grid.
The Community Energy Scheme will employ technologies including solar panels, communal battery stores and ground source heat pumps. As well as powering homes and the heat pump system, electricity produced by the solar panels will feed the largest community energy battery in Europe, which will store it for use during times of increased demand.
Data from the Community Energy Project will be made publicly available online and at Trent Basin’s on-site Community Hub facility. Purpose-built technology at the facility will visualize the data to help educate homeowners, stakeholders and the general public about the scheme. The software used will be developed especially for the project by students at the University of Nottingham.
The UK’s innovation agency Innovate UK is the primary funder of the Community Energy Scheme, which is also supported by Blueprint, the University of Nottingham, Energy Research Accelerator (ERA), AT Kearney and Smartklub. If the scheme trial is successful, the technology will be rolled out across large UK housing developments in the future. Installation of the technologies is planned for later this year.
Nick Ebbs, vice chair at igloo and chief executive at Blueprint comments: “igloo has a history of working with partners to innovate and this is one of our most exciting projects to date. Impact is at the heart of the igloo business and this project is another demonstration of us working hard to deliver for people, place and planet. We’re very proud that Trent Basin is at the forefront and will accelerate these types of technologies being deployed across the UK and further afield.”
