Oakfield, Swindon: helping Nationwide Building Society deliver quality housing in its home town

Igloo has been appointed by Nationwide, the world’s largest building society, as development manager to support the delivery of a major housing project in Swindon, the firm’s home town – working closely with the community and Swindon Borough Council.

A full-time community organiser has been employed to work with local people, firstly to fully understand their neighbourhood, and then to help ensure that the new development is planned and designed sympathetically to address local needs and aspirations.

Igloo is leading the delivery of the project for Nationwide, overseeing development activity including site acquisition, community engagement, design, planning and construction. Metropolitan Workshop have been appointed as lead designers.

Joe Garner, Nationwide’s Chief Executive, said: “Building on our housing heritage, our mutual purpose, and our founding principle that people can achieve more together than they can alone, we aim to show that it’s possible to develop quality homes at fair prices.  By challenging existing practice in just a small way here in Swindon and ensuring the views of locals shape our development, we hope to make an innovative contribution to the national housing debate.”
