Glasgow Canal sweeps top spot at Planning Awards

The Glasgow Canal Partnership, a pioneering joint venture between Glasgow Canals and Glasgow City Council, was a worthy winner at the 2018 Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning.

It was a tense evening as the award category was announced at the very end of a jam-packed programme of accolades, but it was all worthwhile when Glasgow’s Canal was announced the ‘overall winner’.

The formal text read that: “This multi-agency partnership team has grown organically together over a 10-year period. What also came across from the project was a realistic attitude married with an optimistic approach. This, together with a tenacity to never give up, has revived an area for people to live, work and play.”

Gary Watt, development director for igloo and BIGG (A partnership with Scottish Canals and PfP Capital managed by igloo), said of the award: “This project has been organic from the outset but it has always existed to serve the community and people at Maryhill Locks. This is a shining example of a true partnership, where culture eats strategy for breakfast. Bravo to the team on a well-deserved win.”
