Show home at Nationwide’s Oakfield community officially opens

The first show home for Oakfield, Swindon is officially open to the public and homes are now available to reserve.

Igloo has worked with Nationwide Building Society, the world’s largest building society, as their development partner to deliver this exemplary housing project in Nationwide’s home town.

Working with local communities and Swindon Borough Council, Nationwide wanted to demonstrate a mutual approach to house building creating sustainable, well-designed homes and public spaces, within a thriving community.

With strong environmental and social impact credentials, Igloo was appointed to manage the development process for Nationwide and to deliver the sustainable neighbourhood of 239 one- to four-bed homes, 30% of which are designated affordable housing.

Regardless of tenure, all homes are designed to have an EPC A rating, with photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity and heat by state-of-the-art Vaillant air-source heat pumps. The whole development is gas-fee. Each home has parking for one or two cars, while the streets have been designed to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists. Homes either come pre-wired to allow for the installation of an electric car charger or have access to a communal fast charger. Homes are also wired to be battery-ready.

John Long, Director at Igloo said: “We leapt at the chance to partner with Nationwide as we shared a clear purpose to create a place which would be about community, connections and neighbourliness, not just building houses. Oakfield will be an intergenerational community with homes for people of all life stages, integrating younger people, families and older people.”

Kym Shaen-Carter said: “Launching these homes has been a joy. It’s a tricky market out there right now, but the reaction to Oakfield has been incredible. Customers can see first-hand that these homes, and this place, is special. It’s a proud moment for all the many people within Nationwide and Igloo, and our wider team of professionals, who have made it happen.”

Oakfield has already been recognised for its approach to place-making and sustainability, having picked up a Housing Design Award for Building for Healthy Life, a Landscape Institute award for Building with Nature, and a Brownfield award for Public Participation and Engagement.
