Custom Build: Heartlands, Cornwall

igloo is working with UK Government and the National Custom and Self Build Association to accelerate Custom Build in the UK.

Creating a model based on international best practice, igloo has launched ‘HomeMade Homes’, a custom build brand for the UK. Custom Build allows a customer to select their preferred plot, then choose and adapt their preferred house style to create and own a home that suits them individually.

igloo’s first micro pilot in Nottingham secured BuildIt Magazine’s Best Custom Build Award 2015. A second pilot – ‘Heartlands’ in Cornwall, working in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Coastline Housing is now underway to create a new neighbourhood in Pool, near Redruth in Cornwall. The project is part of a long term regeneration programme for the area’s industrial mining past, and won “Best Custom Build project” at the 2016 Housing Design Awards.

Competition and collaboration

Our process for selecting our HomeManufacturers for each project starts from an ideas competition for teams of architect/builders and system manufacturers. For our Heartlands scheme in Cornwall, a final six were chosen to provide a range of well-designed, high quality, good value homes on the site. The chosen partners include self-build kit home manufacturers (Potton, Building with Frames), a local team (Cathedral Builders with architect AOC), and an innovative team (straw bale pioneers Modcell). Two SIP manufacturers made the cut too (Riko from Slovenia and Dwelle from the UK).
