Sarah Wigglesworth, spatial practitioner, former architect and new FAB member

We're pleased to announce a new appointment to our Footprint ® Advisory Board (FAB) – spatial practitioner and former architect Sarah Wigglesworth.

Sarah replaces Sunand Prasad who is stepping down after 12 years of service as a FAB member.

Sarah, a long-time collaborator of igloo, trained as an architect and founded her own practice in 1993. Sarah’s work became widely recognised for her approach to sustainability through self-build, recycled products and waste streams – most notably her 2001 project 9-10 Stock Orchard Street, which featured on Grand Designs. Since then, Sarah has been a champion for ‘greening’ the industry across a range of projects encompassing schools, housing, culture, public realm and sports.

Sarah has collaborated with igloo on several projects including Bermondsey Square, and Trent Basin in Nottingham. She will bring 40 years of experience, principally around people-centred design – not only engaging the community in shaping their future but also designing for wellbeing. Sarah will also support lobbying for legislation around embedding better environmental designs, encouraging the industry to rethink ways of building to tackle climate change.

igloo's FAB, which has been in action for 15 years, brings valuable external perspectives, expertise, and constructive challenge to igloo’s projects across the UK, scrutinising the effectiveness of igloo’s Footprint ® implementation. Additionally, they contribute to annual horizon scanning, offering relevant context and keeping Footprint ® up to date, while also advising on impact reporting, audit reports, and succession planning.

The Footprint ® process, developed by igloo, is a bespoke framework for sustainable development, structured around six core dimensions: Circular, Climate, Community, Place, Wellbeing, and Nature. These dimensions guide all of igloo’s projects to align with UN sustainability and community goals, and the Footprint ® Advisory Board oversees the process to ensure developments meet these objectives.

Sarah Wigglesworth, Work founder and Footprint Advisory Board member said:

“I have always admired igloo’s approach to long-term investment and quality, and their passion to inspire the industry into upholding sustainable practices. I also appreciate the fact that their work extends nationally, and I’m therefore able to use my role on the Board to apply my professional knowledge and help drive positive change up and down the country.

“Change must come from the top down, lobbying those in power, and bottom up, seeking allies in communities. Housing is a human right, and we must collectively reflect on and challenge our ways of thinking – embedding health and wellbeing from the outset. If anyone is going to change the status quo, it is igloo, and I’m delighted to be on board.”

Sam Veal, director at igloo said:

“Our Footprint Advisory Board supports and challenges us to continue to find better ways of developing for People, Place and Planet. Sarah’s wealth of experience will be invaluable to us as we continue to innovate and work towards our collective mission to set new standards in regenerative development.

“It’s also a poignant farewell to Sunand who is stepping down from the board after many years of guidance and encouragement.”

Sarah’s appointment comes as the Footprint Advisory Board recently visited igloo’s Newcastle and Sunderland developments, exploring first-hand how its work comes to life to make a difference.
